Anouk van Kampen Wieling

I am a costume designer and fabricator based in Rotterdam, making clothes for the stage out of material that already exists.

I work across theatre, dance and outdoor performance: designing and building costumes, and running the whole making process from first fitting to opening night. Since 2019 I have worked out of DE WASSERIJ in Rotterdam under my own label, Construct to Survive.

Upcycling is my starting point, not a constraint. Most pieces begin with existing garments and offcuts: taken apart, patched, over-dyed and rebuilt into something that reads clearly from the back row. Alongside that I dye with natural indigo, do repairs, and teach, at Blue Print Amsterdam and in upcycling workshops for kids.

I trained in Fashion Design at HKU Utrecht, after a specialism in clothing construction at Alfa College Groningen, and interned in Reykjavík with MAGNEA and Anita Hirlekar. I am equally happy as designer, fabricator, tailor or dresser, and I would rather be part of a company than work alone.
